Carlsbad Honors Two Citizens of the Year

Wednesday, November 9, 2011

In a packed Council Chamber filled with family and friends, Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall presented honors last night to the City’s two Citizens of the Year: Hope Wrisley and Jim Smith.

According to a recent article in the North County Times:

The two honorees were selected by Mayor Matt Hall with the assistance of a four-member committee that included former Mayor Bud Lewis, city communications manager Kristina Ray said Friday.

Smith, a real estate agent who is active in the Hi-Noon Rotary club, couldn't be reached for comment Friday. In the past, he has said that the golf course project would benefit people decades from now and be a community asset.

"We are doing this for people who will be playing 20, 30, 40 years from now," he said in a 2003 North County Times article about the project's financing.

Wrisley, a retired travel agent, said Friday that she has been active in local schools and civic issues nearly from the moment she and her husband arrived in Carlsbad some 47 years ago.

"People ask me why I do so much," she said, adding that she tells them, "I'd rather wear out than rust out."
